LET’S FIND OUT ABOUT COSMETIC PRODUCT CERTIFICATIONS TOGETHER:

When purchasing a particular cosmetic, it is essential to pay attention to the labels and especially check the certifications awarded by official bodies.

BUT HOW CAN WE BE SURE THAT THE PRODUCTS ARE REALLY ORGANIC?

First of all, we must clarify a distinction, namely that between the: ORGANIC COSMETICS and NATURAL COSMETICS.

  • ORGANIC COSMETICS
: They are obviously natural but cannot be 100 percent natural because they must necessarily contain: emulsifiers, preservatives and other substances that can guarantee preservation and stability over time. But this does not mean that they are harmful or damaging to the skin since a percentage of these substances are obtained by processing plant elements from certified plant agriculture. In addition, there are many types of organic cosmetics on the market such as:

  1. CERTIFIED ORGANIC COSMETICS
: Those that possess an organic certification guaranteed by a recognized body and have passed strict inspections.

  2. ECOLOGICAL COSMETICS
: With plant extracts that are environmentally friendly but without certification.

  3. MIXED COSMETICS
: Those in which the ingredients are not all-natural and not all from organic farming.

  4. VEGAN COSMETICS
: In which there is no trace of ingredients or derivatives of animal origin.

  5. CRUELTY FREE COSMETICS
: In which any kind of mistreatment of animals is excluded.

  • NATURAL COSMETICS
: They do not contain synthetic chemical compounds but are formulated with ingredients derived from plant extracts.

HOW DO YOU GET ORGANIC CERTIFICATION?

To obtain organic cosmetics certification on its products, the company must have them tested by an accredited body. The controls are by no means easy to pass for various reasons:

  1. The crops from which the ingredients are extracted must not use GMOs and PESTICIDES.
  2. Plants should not be in contact with harmful substances or pollutants.
  3. With regard to the collection of raw materials, the natural cycle of seasons and reproduction must be respected.
  4. In addition, ORGANIC cosmetics cannot contain about half of the 8,000 substances that are included in traditional cosmetics such as:
  • COLORANTS
  • ADDITIVES
  • SYNTHETIC PERFUMES
  • PARAFFINS AND SILICONES
  • SUBSTANCES SUBJECTED TO RADIATION
  • INGREDIENTS FROM DEAD ANIMALS

MAJOR ORGANIC COSMETICS CERTIFICATIONS:

  1. NATRUE
: The leading international standard on organic and natural cosmetics. Natrue certification involves three stages: to gain promotion to the first stage, one must prove that all ingredients are of natural origin and are processed only by careful and sustainable methods. In the next two steps, the proportion of materials from certified organic agriculture is assessed, where a larger assessment ensures a higher organic content. It was created by the International Natural and Organic Association.

  2. AIAB
: The Brand Bio Cosmetics AIAB (Association of Organic Agriculture) ensures that operators comply with a specific specification and some basic principles such as: no allergenic and irritating non-plant raw materials or those considered harmful to human health, products must be completely GMO FREE, l’absence of animal testing, l’Use of agricultural and livestock products from certified organic farming, l’Absence of ecologically unsustainable materials, both in the product and in the packaging.

  3. CCPB
: AKA Consortium for the Control of Organic Products, verifies that organic farming standards are being met. It operates as a certification and inspection body for agri-food products as well as “no food” products obtained in the organic and eco-friendly and eco-sustainable production sector. In fact, CCPB certifies organic, natural cosmetics, as well as medical devices from organic farming thanks to specific standards developed for the sector.
  4. ICEA: That is. Institute for Ethical and Environmental Certification, is the entity that Certifies both natural and organic products in Italy, but recognized as a control body in all European countries, to which it guarantees the quality of approved products through strict controls, both on all ingredients (which must be pure and dermocompatible) and on the finished product (which must also be suitable for sensitive or intolerant skin).

  5. COSMOS
: AKA Cosmetic Organic Standard, and is the single European standard governing the certification of natural and organic cosmetic products. In fact, the standard provides for two distinct levels of certification: one for the organic product and/or ingredient (Cosmos Organic) and one for the natural product (Cosmos Natural). With a further distinction between ingredients and finished products: for the latter, there is a requirement for a minimum percentage of organic ingredients (at least 10 percent for rinse-off products and those containing more than 80 percent mineral ingredients and at least 20 percent for all other finished products), as well as a requirement that the sum in percentage of organic and natural portions be indicated on the packaging.

  6. DEMETER
: The Association for the Protection of Biodynamic Quality in Italy is a certification and inspection body that certifies the chain of products from biodynamic agriculture. Demeter in 2012 established a specific and extremely detailed standard for cosmetics, called: DEMETER/BIODYNAMIC, which includes very restrictive standards.

  7. ECOCERT
: The body that originated in France has been certifying both natural and organic products since 1991; it is an organization with offices in 24 countries. With the label“ECOLOGICAL AND ORGANIC COSMETICS,” the percentage of natural ingredients must be at least 95 percent. In addition, 95 percent of the plant substances used must be of organic origin. The remaining 5 percent of ingredients are scrupulously controlled, as is the use of minerals, organic acids, salts and other harmless raw materials. Ecocert also prohibits: the use of synthetic perfumes, synthetic preservatives, synthetic organic dyes, mineral oils and other petroleum products, propylene glycol and other glycols, SlS, SLES and other ethoxylates, silicones and other synthetic ingredients, and raw materials tested on animals. With the second label “ ORGANIC COSMETICS,” the requirements are less strict: at least 50 percent of the ingredients in a given product must be derived from organic farming.
  8. EU ECOLABEL: It is the European eco-label, established in 1992, which distinguishes products and services that, while ensuring high standards, are characterized by a reduced environmental impact throughout their life cycle, also taking into account the average lifespan of products, and their reusability and reduction of packaging and their recycled material content. Ecolabel criteria also cover important aspects pertaining to consumer health and safety, as well as, in addition any social and ethical aspects of production processes.
